Today we figured it would be fun to make some psytrance-style patches in eurorack!
Of course the Mutant Drums + Mutant Brain are in the video, but the real star of the show in psy is of course the bassline and kick!
For the bassline in this little video, a simple sawtooth VCO is fed into a Red Dragon filter. The Red Dragon is pushed to its limits by overdriving core of the filter with the control on the front panel of the module. This feature gives us a nice punchy attack to the filter opening and closing! As well, the warbly, analogue Soviet-inspired core of the filter is switched over fully to 24dB/oct mode for maximum filter slope between the highest and lowest cutoff point from the envelope provided. Of course it’s important to make sure that your bassline note triggers are also retriggering the oscillator with each hit! This is important to reset the phase on a psytrance bassline so it remains consistent with each note.
Have you made some good psy basslines on your modular? Let us know your patch in the comments!
